Occurrence and gas chromatographic determination of volatile fatty acids in landfill leachate. The case of two landfills in Gdansk Pomerania, Poland
نویسندگان
چکیده
In landfills containing biological matter volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are generated at high rate at the early stage of waste disposal and their content in leachate is high as compared to the leachate from old parts of landfill since they are converted to methane gas. Monitoring of the leachate for the content of VFAs can help determine the processes occurring in waste and possible effect of the leachate on the environment in the case of some leakage. The content of VFAs was determined, using the method developed, in inflow and outflow of ground water and in the brook water passing through one landfill upstream and downstream of the landfill. The data show that some, though rather small, amounts of the acids generated in the landfill are transferred to the above waters. VFAs were determined in the two landfills of similar age and waste composition; their contents in the leachate were not drastically different.

Estimation and Modeling of Biogas Production in Rural Small Landfills (Case Study: Chaharmahaal and Bakhtiari and Yazd Rural Areas)
One of the main factors contributing to greenhouse gas emissions in the environment is the production of pollutant gases in landfills. Collecting the landfill gases (LFG) effectively reduces the emission of gasses from the landfill site. A precise collection system for LFG can create the potential for energy generation in addition to emissions reduction. However, in Iran, the implementation of ...

Determination of the endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in leachate and groundwater samples from the landfill sites is very important because of the proven harmful effects of these compounds on human and animal organisms. A method combining ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction (USAEME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for simultaneous determination...
متن کاملFormation, occurrence and determination of volatile fatty acids in environmental and related samples
Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are short chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acids containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms in a molecule. They are formed in the process of anaerobic biodegradation of larger organic molecules and therefore are commonly present in municipal wastewater, effluents of food industry, livestock farm wastewater, sewage sludge, landfill leachate, feces, urine, etc. and are emitted b...

Background and Objectives: Fresh leachate has a low pH and high amounts of BOD and COD which are mainly constituents with low weight molecular such as volatile fatty acids ( acetic and propionic acids) .Management and treatment of leachate is an important subject in sanitary landfill operation and performance.Th objective of this study is determining the efficiency of the integrated coagulation...
متن کاملAppropriate Use of MSW Leachate Recycling in Municipal Solid Waste Landfilling1
There is considerable interest today in the so-called “biocell” approach toward municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilling in which leachate is introduced back into the landfill. This approach reduces the cost of leachate management and is said to reduce/eliminate the potential for long term landfill gas production and groundwater pollution. However, a critical review of the typical approach being...
